What To Wear To Opening Day At The Del Mar Races

Hi VDV Babes! Andrea here, owner of Shop Van de Vort and Van de Vort Del Mar. This year I’ve been chosen to be an official style ambassador for the 2016 Del Mar Racing Season. I’m so flattered and extremely excited. I love the races—in my opinion, they’re American summertime defined—and the fact that the track is located around the corner from our store in Del Mar makes them even better. Opening Day at the Del Mar Races is this Friday, so today we’re sharing some of our favorite looks for the occasion. And don't forget to keep an eye on the VDV blog for more posts on all things related to the Del Mar Races!

Anyone familiar with a San Diego summer knows that Opening Day at the Del Mar Races is one of the most anticipated events of the season. And anyone who’s been knows that it’s about so much more than the horse races. With over 40,000 people in attendance and a whole lot out of outfit judging going on (not in a salty way, but literally, with the Opening Day Hats Contest), it’s essential to choose a look that’ll be all your own. Even more importantly, the all day event can take a toll; think massive crowds, high temps and TONS of walking around. So in that vein, being comfortable and staying cool is key. Those are a lot of boxes to check all for one outfit, we know, but as always, Shop VDV and VDV Del Mar has you covered. Here’s what we’ll be wearing for Opening Day at the Del Mar Races.

For Love & Lemons Rosali Maxi

This year is the first time that Opening Day will be held on a Friday, so the only thing bigger than the hats will be the crowds. Stand out in this sweet, floral printed Rosali Maxi by For Love & Lemons. The maxi length and long sleeves will help keep you a little more shielded from the sun, but the sheer mesh fabrication keeps it lightweight and breathable. When you find yourself in the Winner’s Circle, you’ll be glad you’re rocking this Instagram-worthy stunner.

Vagabond Penelope Romper

Most days you can find us in cutoff shorts, but Opening Day is one instance where our go-to One Teaspoons just won’t fly. However you CAN get that same level of ease and comfort in this Vagabond Penelope Romper. The lace sleeves and back, coupled with a sweet tie front, make it feel dressy enough for opening day. Wear it with a pair of comfy wedges and you’re good to go.

Stone Cold Fox Bonita Dress

We’re never not in the market for a classic white dress, and this Stone Cold Fox Bonita Dress is at the top our list. The off the shoulder neckline makes for no weird tan lines, and the lace trim makes it feel just special enough for a big social event like Opening Day. Don’t forget to keep the sun off your face with a wide brimmed straw bolero, like this one from Janessa Leone

You could opt for a typical body con or sundress, but that isn’t really your style, is it? Bring a bit of edge to the track in this Flynn Skye Cleo Crop Top paired with printed palazzo pants and a Janessa Leone visor, which is a welcome departure from all those run-of-the-mill hats. The wide leg silhouette makes these printed palazzo pants look like a skirt, which keeps the whole look feeling dressy enough for the occasion.

Once you’ve got your Opening Day outfit, the only thing left to do is to make those post-race plans. Word on the street (or, track?) is that everyone is headed to the Rancho Valencia for their annual After Pony Party—hope to see you there!
